The most commonly cited strengths of Fireworks are:

  • the ease of learning (people just get it and can use it proficiently relatively quickly)
  • the speed at which you can create wireframes and design comps, either by creating the graphics within FW or a combination of creating graphics and important graphics from PS and AI
  • multiple pages, shared layers, symbols, and styles to make design changes and iterations quickly and efficiently
  • the ability to rapidly prototype with Dreamweaver, Flash, and Flash Catalyst or just with Fireworks alone (e.g., creating HTML click-throughs or clickable PDFs)
  • the ability to manipulate bitmaps and create vector art in very straightforward ways (e.g., click on an object directly on the canvas, and FW knows if it is a bitmap or vector and shows the appropriate properties and options)
  • bitmap optimization is excellent, and the ability to slice and export multiple bitmaps with independent optimization settings makes generating assets super-easy
  • the ability to export to images, CSS, PDF, FXG, or HTML prototypes all from the same source file

For someone new to web design, the biggest advantage of FW is probably the ability to quickly create and modify designs and easily optimize and export the assets.

Good luck designing for the web and other digital devices!
